Agota Balot
Our head coach and manager, Agota Balot, is a former Hungarian Junior Team Champion with more than 25 years of fencing and personal training experience. Born in Budapest, Hungary, she is multilingual, trained in management, and is a certified personal trainier and former marathon runner. She has met fencers from all over the world and has been fortunate to have opportunities to bout with champions and fencing legends. The daughter of Magda Nyari, five time World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist, she has spent her entire life with fencing. She currently lives in Toms River with her husband, Robert, and her 3 dogs and 2 cats.

James B. Carpenter
Jim competed in the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta Georgia, narrowly missing winning a medal with a sudden death overtime loss to Italy in the team epee even t. He won a Silver medal in the 1995 Pan American Games as well as a Bronze medal in the 1991 Pan American Games. He fenced in three World Championships for the United States and was ranked in the top 10 of the US Fencing Association point standing for over 10 years. During that time he won 5 Team National Championships and took the Silver Medal twice in the Individual National Championships.

As a coach he has trained numerous fencers who have attained high rankings in the USFA point standings including at one point having three Women’s Epee fencers in the top 10 of the standings. Furthermore, he was Chairman of the powerful New York Athletic Club fencing program from 1990 until 1996. He was also the Director of High Performance of the US Fencing Association from March of 2007 through August of 2008.

Istvan Marton
Istvan Marton is a former member of the Hungarian National Foil Team. He was National Champion ten times and reached the finals six times at World Championships and fourth place at Summer Olympic Games. He has trained in the famous Hungarian Coaches College. He is an expert in all three weapons. His epee student, fencer Zoltan Szekely, won gold at the 1981 World Championship. For many years he worked with the Hungarian Junior National Team. Mr. Marton was invited to many countries where he developed world class fencers. He was Head Coach of the Egyptian, Tunisian and Indian National Fencing Teams. His students reached the finals at World Cups and World Championship events. Four years ago, Mr. Marton brought his expertise to the United States. He developed fencers who ranked nationally and reached the finals at the Summer Nationals. Mr. Marton’s dedication to fencing and passion to teach are great assets for our members.

Maged Shaker

Mac has had 20+ years experience in the realm of World Class fencing.  He is a two time Olympian: Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996.  Coach Shaker has trained many years in Germany with the National Olympic Team.  His other outstanding achievements include: 1988 World Championship, Athens, 8th place, 1986 World Cup, Como, Italy, 1st place.  Mac was 7 times National Champion in his home country.

 

Mac has a Master Degree in Physical Education and fencing coaching.  He has coached many fencers in national and international competitions.  He was Head Coach at James Madison University, VA and NJIT, NJ.  He has excellent teaching skills for both beginner and advanced fencers.  Many fencers have benefitted from his exceptional strategic advisement.

Dr. Samual F. D’Ambola
Dr. D'Ambola is a legend in US fencing. He is an outstanding left handed fencer. He was a member of the undefeated Seton Hall University team. He was several times state champion in individual and in team events. He coached the Essex Catholic High School for 14 years. During his time, his fencers won nine team state championships, eight Cetrullo Tournament Championships and two greater New York Championships. Many of his fencers became interscholastic, state and national champions, leading them the legend Peter Westbrook, 1984 Olympic bronze medalist and 13 times national saber champion. Mr. D'Ambola is inducted member of the National Fencing Hall of Fame, Seton Hall University Hall of Fame, Newark Athletic Hall of Fame and Essex Catholic High School Hall of Fame. It is our privilege to have "Doc" coaching at the Atlantic Fencing Club. His lifelong experience and endless enthusiasm for fencing helps to motivate and improve our young and older fencers.

Stephen Kovacs
Stephen
enthusiastic way of coaching comes from his love for saber. His refreshing style was greatly influenced by his former coach Olympian and world-champion Vladimir Nazlimov. Stephen was several times Cadet, Junior Saber National Champion and also IFA Champion. He was selected to the Universiade Team and the World Team, and he was alternate to the USA senior saber team. His young competition career was stopped short by an Achilles tendon injury. Stephen brings solid fencing technique and very positive attitude to his popular classes.

Mary Mottola-Golding
Our coach, Mary, has played and competed in many sports. The majority of her coaching and competitive experience is in tennis, where she has been ranked #1 in the US in Women's Doubles and has twice been selected to represent the USA as a member of the Young Cup Team in international competition. The intrigue of the sport of fencing has drawn her to compete and coach fencing at the Atlantic Fencing Club. She has worked with all levels of ability and ages including youths, juniors and adults who have gone on to compete as well as those who are primarily interested in sport for recreation and fitness. Mary's 25 years of coaching experience, her understanding of exceptional details and her ability to communicate the fine points of fencing makes her a very popular coach in our club.

Joann Vaiani
At 15, she was the youngest C rated Junior Olympic foil fencer. Taught by the best NJ coaches, now she teaches youth fencers. Mother of two fencers, she relates well to the children's "swashbuckling" expectations.
